And of course there is always the option to go it alone – some vital tips on that below.
What makes for a great Oktoberfest tour?
Location, location, location. Let’s face it, after drinking massive Bavarian beers all day long in the beer tents, the last thing you want to worry about is how to get back to your bed. So the single most important consideration when choosing an Oktoberfest tour is where you’re staying.
Make sure you do your research and choose a tour that includes good accommodation close to the festival grounds, ideally walking distance.
Beer tent reservations. Trust us, you want them included, especially if you are going on a weekend. You’ll have virtually no chance of getting into a beer tent on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday without reservations unless you line up hours in advance.
During the week it’s easy to get into the tents without reservations for small groups, but much of this is weather dependant. If it rains, the beer tents fill up early and unless you’re seated at a table you won’t be getting served.
Excellent reviews. This is on your bucket list, right? Then why risk going all the way to Munich and choosing anything but an Oktoberfest tour with the best reviews?
Your travel buddies. A beer tastes much better with other beer connoisseurs, right? Of course it does, because enjoying a good drop with others is how you can make friends for life. And it’s those stories you make when raising a glass together that you’ll be telling others about in future.
So when researching for Oktoberfest tours, it’s highly recommended you consider who you’ll be sitting in the beer tents with. A great way to do that is to check out the tour operator’s Oktoberfest Facebook page and their other social media channels, and contacting them to ask what kind of traveller they attract.

Organising your own Oktoberfest tour?
Prefer to organise your own accommodation and itinerary? Then make absolutely sure you plan your trip well in advance – at least 6 months out, even 12 months out if you’re going on a weekend.
Hotels book out incredibly fast, with most hotels taking bookings for the next year’s Oktoberfest immediately after the end of this year’s festival. The most expensive and difficult to get dates are opening weekend and closing weekend, specifically the Friday and Saturday nights.
If you’re in a small group, you should also consider getting beer tent reservations, as it may be extremely difficult to get into the beer tents on a weekend (especially if it rains). People are often seen lining up outside the beer tents many hours before they open.
If you’re flexible with dates, our tip is to go mid-week. It’s far less crowded and the atmosphere is just as good in the beer tents. Oh and you won’t be lining up hours on end for the rides either.
And lastly, learn this song. It’s the law. Prost!
You need to learn the Ein Prosit song and drink beer at the end of it.
