Established since 1867, this is the oldest Oktoberfest festival beer tent in which the ceremonial opening of the first beer barrel festival is held by Munich’s mayor. It was originally an old wooden barn which can accommodate 50 people, but presently expanded to become one of the largest Wiesn tent which can accommodate up to 10,000 seats. It is by far, one of the most important tents in the Oktoberfest festival as the opening ceremony starts here.
Due to the importance of this Oktoberfest tent, there are lots of politicians, important and famous people, and student’s associations gathering in this tent. The crowd is comprised of young Germans with waitresses in traditional white aprons and bows. After the Munich mayor taps the first keg and calls out the famous words “Ozapft is”, each Oktoberfest tents can now start their beer draughts. Then the first mug of beer will be given to the Bavarian Prime Minister.
Schottenhamel tent is contrsucted much similar to that of a large farmer’s house. Unlike the usual picnic bench style seating of other tents, Schottenhamel tent has square benches which allows tablemates to get to know one another. A must try is their popular Bavarian specialty they offer such as grilled giant-turkey thighs out of the oven. Music band playing on the background is Otto Schwarzfischer. Inside seating capacity can accommodate up to 6,000 people, while 4,000 people can sit outside.
Spaten-Franziskaner is the beer served in Schottenhamel tent. Considered to be a popular beer, it has a delicious, sweet and roasted malt flavor with the perfect amount of hops. It is amber in color and 5.9% in alcohol content.
