While the beer consumption at Oktoberfest is in itself the stuff of legends, some people go the extra mile and accept the daunting challenge of downing a 1-Litre Stein in a single attempt. No putting down the glass – they’ll get booed off by the crowd if they do.
Any thirsty punter who has ever been to Oktoberfest will have been witness to this feat dozens of time, as there are always several contenders every time the band takes a break. The ritual generally involves standing on the table with a full beer and raising the glass to get the crowd’s attention. Once the cheering starts, the drinking begins. Simple really.
Most never make it. Many fail spectacularly. The toughest do it twice in a row.
But once in a while a truly amazing event unfolds where the crowd is treated to a real spectacle. This is one of those moments. Enjoy.
