Oktoberfest Legend – Dan Moynihan, USA
Once was never enough for Dan, who just attended his 4th Oktoberfest in Munich. Apparently he’s still thirsty for more and will be back again next year.
How many times have you been to Oktoberfest and which years?
I have been to Oktoberfest 4 times. 2011,2013,2014 and 2015. No two have been alike and all of them have been absolutely incredible.
Tell us a bit about your experience
Oh man where to start. It is always such a haze. I remember my very first Oktoberfest. That fateful evening I walked onto the Wiesn grounds with 2 strangers I had just met at the hotel. We were absolutely awestruck by its brilliance. There were marching bands playing, ornate horse drawn wagons carrying kegs of beer and carnival rides everywhere. I couldn’t believe that this fair was built up and taken down every year. Structures like the Lowenbrau Lion tower just seemed to cool to ever deconstruct.
We wound up wandering around the tents until we found a half empty table on the balcony of the Ochsenbraterie. I had never before had so much fun with a group of complete randoms! We sang, we danced, and most importantly we DRANK. At one point one of them challenged our waitress to a drinking contest. At the end of the night when we all went our separate ways I had a belly full of beer, a brain full of happy memories and a camera full of great pictures. It’s a shame I couldn’t remember a single one of their names the next day.
What’s your favourite thing about the festival?
I love how this festival brings people together. 6 million strangers all in the same spot just looking to enjoy Bavarian beer. Singing, dancing, and drinking shoulder to shoulder. It’s really amazing and I have never seen anything else like it
What would you tell someone who’s never been to Oktoberfest and is thinking about going?
GO! Immediately! It won’t matter if you stay in a Hotel, a hostel or a swag, you will still have an amazing time.
Your favourite beer tent / ride / food?
I love the Haufbrau Tent but my favorite beer is, hands down, Augustiner. The rollercoaster is a blast and my favorite food is always going to be the potato salad.
Anything else you’d like to say about this epic event.
Oktoberfest is known for it’s beer to be sure. But Oktoberfest really does have something for everyone. Make sure you take some time to ride the rides and try the food stalls. Play some games or go to the Sekt tent. Enjoy it all!
