The Stuttgart Beer Festival’s Drive Me Home Service
So… Germans are pretty nice, huh? They bring us super-sized beers and pretzels on demand, they install underground beer-pipelines to preserve the environment (and to get you that beer even faster), and they let you drive as fast as you want on their highways. How sweet! But just when you think they can’t get any nicer, you hear about the Drive Me Home service at the Stuttgart Beer Festival (locally known as the Cannstatter Volksfest).
THE DRIVE ME HOME SERVICE
What sounds like the latest in dating app technology is actually the Stuttgart Beer Festival’s way of making sure no one drinks and drives (presumably really, really fast) on their way home from the festival. The Drive Me Home service is unique in Germany and has been operating since 1965, back when it was all Beetles and VW busses. Here’s how it works: Say you drive yourself to the Stuttgart Beer Festival (in your own car) only to realize a few litres later what a terrible idea that was. Taking advantage of the Drive Me Home service, someone from the festival will, you guessed it, drive you home. In your car. For free. The only thing they require is cab fare to get the drivers back to the festival. In a country that prioritizes beer and speed, it’s good to know they’re looking out for us!
HOW TO USE THE DRIVE ME HOME SERVICE
The Drive Me Home service is available every night of the festival from 8:00 pm onwards. To take advantage of this, you can call +49 711 9554-3333 or stop by the Wasen building of the in.Stuttgart event company (next to the German Red Cross). Because what goes best with a speed-limit-free highway system? Sober drivers!
